Here's a small Reddit post to help server owners grow their own unique server. Hopefully you find this informative and possibly you might take away from this post! Mods if you do have any issues with this post, please just tell me and I can edit before removing.
Top 5 Ways to Get More Members in your Discord Server
Growing your server might be tough and sometimes you might just run out of options or you might reach a point in your member count where your having trouble to go further. Here are 5 ways to get more members inside your discord server.
1) Pick a Niche
Just like starting your own business, picking a niche can really help your server gain interest. A niche is simply what you're trying to go for. Popular niches are anime discord servers, edgy discord servers and maybe even music related servers. When you choose a niche, it becomes much more easier to brand your discord server and most importantly, it's easier to target audiences. Lets say you start a general server. Well, you can always brand your server but in the long run, how do you create interest. How would you get someone else's attention? When I started my own discord server, I spent a bit of my time doing niche research and found that there aren't any big servers related to kpop. So I started my own kpop related discord server. It was easy to brand and I never had any trouble finding audiences because I always could have just looked on Instagram for big fan pages or YouTube channels.
2) Start Branding your Discord Server
You got your niche set up, now how do you visualize it so the whole world can see? Branding is probably the most important thing to growing your discord server. Just like everyone else, people eat with their eyes, buy what they find looks the best and many huge businesses create well thought out branding campaigns and more. How you brand your server, is up to you. But I recommend you start off with writing some catchy paragraphs and start brain storming with your mods or admins. Here's something I wrote that helped me gain over 7000 members.
« Kpop.Chat, the #1 K-Pop Discord Server »
With this, I was able to set it up in the welcome channel and it went along well with the reputation of my discord server. I was also able to take this and mix different brand assets together. Its like peanut butter on bread, they are two different things but they go together well.
Artwork is also huge in branding too, servers NEED astonishing banners and logos. When you're creating a logo, try creating something relative to your niche but also brands you out there one of a kind. What if you suck at art? Don't worry I'm sure you can hire a graphic designer on fiverr relatively cheap. One thing for sure is that you need to keep your branding consistent. You need to keep a logo and keep it there forever. You can alter your logos or banners a bit but don't change much, instead try to stay consistent. I see so many servers change their logos so often and I think it drives me nuts a bit. Here's my own server logo, I feel like it can be a great example.

3) Advertising
Well you got everything setup, now what? Once you built your brand, now get it out there. It's much more simpler than you might think. Sure you can use discord server advertisement pages but, they don't work as much. And trust me, if you want results you need to pay a lot of money, but the results would be too little for what you're paying for. There's a whole spectrum of options you can use for advertising, including social media, back linking and even setting up a website with an SEO background. Here are a couple options for you:
Facebook Groups - Depending on your niche, Facebook groups can work really well for you. Try and network with group admins and see if you can partner your discord server with them, it's worth the shot
Instagram Marketing - I used to own my own clothing store so Instagram helped me A LOT. What I do personally is I start up Instagram pages and run automation programs on them to help gain followers with regular posts every other day. Instagram also allows you to keep on retargeting the same people after they follow you which is an amazing tool.
Contacting People - Yeah, you need to get a bit social for this one and I recommend you do this after a good 1000 members. In my niche, kpop has idols who sing and dance and sometimes, just sometimes I got opportunities to talk with influential people. Sometimes it worked out and sometimes it didn't so you need to be very charismatic for this, which is one thing that makes a server active, a good owner.
Back linking - I'm not sure if this is the right way to describe this but sometimes what you can do is try and find as many places you can do post your servers invite link. What i did myself was I have a link (and mods please tell me if this isn't allowed and ill remove it) but I wrote a small index.html code that redirects my sub domain to my discord server. The sub domain looked like this: http://join.kpopdiscord.com/ and basically when people clicked it, it redirects them to my discord server. I think this is a great and innovative way to disguise a dirty invite link to something that looks way more attractive. This is a really primitive method though and I recommend you spend some time making a home page for your discord server.
4) Create a Network
If you did it well once, you can do it again! Create another discord server, brand it and then you can use the MEE6 bot to simply dm server links when people join. Lets say people join my server, when they join mee6 dms them a link to my other server. And when someone joins my other server, mee6 dms them a link to join my server. This can increase your server count because now you have a brand in two different niches and you can exchange between servers like this. This is probably how servers do become huge (besides global emotes) and I feel like once people do get a lot of members in a server, this can be a great way to expand further. Here's an example of what I am doing currently.

5) Gain link rep
Link rep is what I like to call the number of people who have clicked your invite. What I recommend doing is getting your mods to create permanent invite links and you can pin them to your staff channel. When you are doing advertising research, try using different links in each source so you can see what works well and what doesn't work at all.
