Report: Microsoft decided against buying Nokia, for now

WP Central

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer considers buying Nokia. "Kinda want"

Rumors are flight effectually today, notably from the Annals who has it on good account, that Microsoft did seriously consider ownership Nokia simply decided confronting the deal once the Finnish firms' books were opened.

If the story is authentic, information technology represents an interesting twist on the partnership and may still go out a common cold feeling for Microsoft's other OEMs. The Annals cites "well placed sources" for the story so nosotros'll take to take their word (and their sources) on the matter but Microsoft reportedly was "unimpressed" with Nokia'south numbers--or at least didn't come across the added actress value of buying the company versus just partnering with them.

As the Register puts it: Nokia didn't want to sell and Microsoft really didn't want to buy. The but reason for an acquisition would have been to keep Nokia out of someone else's hands due to their IP and technology value. Merely both companies have time even so--Microsoft has Windows Phone 8 to launch and Nokia needs all the same has cash to fire. In other words, Microsoft is at that place as a gold parachute should Nokia really get-go to crash by next year. Not just that, should such a scenario happen Microsoft would actually go a better deal due to the de-valued stock.

From our perspective every bit consumers, we don't come across the value had Microsoft decided to get forward. Buying a visitor, integrating different corporate cultures and alienating your partner OEMs, notably HTC, seems similar something that could have backfired. Not to mention, it's not clear what would be different from today as information technology appears Microsoft is getting all that it wants already from Nokia.

We recollect there's piffling doubt that both companies accept explored numerous options going frontward--that shouldn't be a surprise. But nosotros would rather return to this ongoing rumor late in 2022/early on 2022 to see how Windows phone eight is doing.
